Solitaire Win Rates Explained: Can You Win Every Game?

Not every solitaire deal is winnable. Learn the actual win rates for Klondike, Spider, FreeCell, Pyramid, and other variants — the numbers may surprise you.

The Big Question: Is Every Solitaire Game Winnable?

No. One of the most common misconceptions about solitaire is that every deal can be won if you play perfectly. In reality, the winnability varies dramatically by variant — from nearly 100% for FreeCell to under 5% for Pyramid.

Understanding win rates helps you set realistic expectations and appreciate when you do win a difficult variant.

Win Rates by Variant

FreeCell: ~99.999% — Nearly every FreeCell deal is solvable. Out of the classic 32,000 numbered deals, only a handful (including the famous deal #11982) have been proven unsolvable. This makes FreeCell essentially a pure puzzle game where skill determines the outcome.

One-Suit Spider: ~99% — With only one suit, almost every deal is winnable with good play. The single-suit constraint makes it easy to build same-suit sequences, which is the key to Spider.

Klondike (Draw One): ~80% — Roughly 80% of Klondike deals are theoretically winnable with perfect play and unlimited undo. However, practical win rates for skilled human players are typically 25-35%.

Klondike (Draw Three): ~75% — Draw Three is harder because you can only access every third card in the stock. The theoretical win rate drops slightly, and practical rates drop more significantly.

Yukon: ~80% — Similar to Klondike in theoretical winnability, but the lack of a stock pile and more flexible movement rules create a different strategic challenge.

Two-Suit Spider: ~20-30% — The jump from one suit to two is enormous. Most deals are technically solvable, but the strategic complexity makes practical win rates much lower.

Golf: ~10-15% — Golf depends heavily on the initial card layout. Most games end with at least a few tableau cards remaining.

Four-Suit Spider: under 10% — The hardest mainstream Spider variant. Even expert players win fewer than 1 in 10 games.

Pyramid: ~2% — Pyramid has one of the lowest win rates in solitaire. The fixed pairing mechanic (cards summing to 13) means many deals simply lack viable pairing combinations.

Forty Thieves: ~10% — The single-card movement restriction and same-suit building make this one of the hardest solitaire games. Even experienced players find it punishing.

Theoretical vs. Practical Win Rates

There is an important distinction between theoretical and practical win rates. The theoretical rate assumes perfect play with unlimited undo and perfect information (in applicable games). The practical rate reflects what skilled human players achieve.

For example, Klondike is theoretically winnable ~80% of the time, but most players win 15-25% of their games. The gap exists because humans make suboptimal decisions, especially in games with hidden information.

Does Difficulty Make a Game Better?

Not necessarily. The "best" solitaire variant is the one you enjoy most. Some players love the near-certainty of FreeCell, where losing means you made a mistake. Others prefer the unpredictability of Klondike, where the hidden cards keep every game surprising.

Low win rates can actually increase enjoyment for some players. Winning a game of Pyramid (2% win rate) feels far more rewarding than winning FreeCell for the hundredth time.

How to Improve Your Personal Win Rate

Track your statistics across multiple sessions. Play Solitaire Gaming automatically records your win rate, best time, and streaks for each variant.

Focus on one variant at a time. Deep practice in a single game type improves pattern recognition faster than switching between variants constantly.

Study your losses. When you lose, think about what went wrong. Was there a specific decision that led to the dead end? Could a different move order have saved the game?
