How to Win Solitaire: Expert Tips for Every Variant

Want to win more solitaire games? These expert-level tips for Klondike, Spider, FreeCell, and other variants will dramatically improve your win rate.

The Mindset of a Solitaire Winner

Winning at solitaire starts with understanding that not every game is winnable. In Klondike, roughly 20% of deals are impossible regardless of skill. Accepting this frees you to focus on what you can control: making optimal decisions with the cards you are dealt.

The best solitaire players share three traits: patience, pattern recognition, and willingness to undo moves. If you develop these habits, your win rate will improve across every variant.

Klondike: The Classic

The single most impactful habit in Klondike is prioritizing face-down cards. Every hidden card you reveal gives you more information and more options. When choosing between two moves of equal apparent value, always pick the one that uncovers a hidden card.

Build foundations evenly. A common beginner mistake is rushing cards to foundations whenever possible. If your Spades are at 7 but your Hearts are at 2, you have locked away five potentially useful cards. Keep all four foundations within 2-3 cards of each other.

In Draw Three mode, the stock has a fixed order. Experienced players track which cards appear at which position and plan multi-pass strategies around this knowledge.

Spider: The Challenge

In Spider, same-suit sequences are everything. A mixed-suit column is dead weight that blocks progress. Always prefer building a same-suit run, even if it means making more moves or temporarily covering useful cards.

Empty columns in Spider function like turbo boosts. With one empty column, you can rearrange entire sections of the board. With two, the possibilities multiply. Protect your empty columns as if your game depends on it — because it does.

Never deal from the stock until you have exhausted every productive move on the tableau. Each deal adds 10 new cards that complicate the board. Make maximum progress before introducing that complexity.

FreeCell: The Puzzle

FreeCell rewards planning more than any other solitaire variant. Before your first move, spend 30-60 seconds studying the entire layout. Identify buried Aces, count available free cells and columns, and trace a rough path to victory.

The Supermove formula — (free cells + 1) times 2 to the power of empty columns — determines how many cards you can move at once. Keeping this number high gives you flexibility. Filling free cells recklessly destroys your ability to make complex moves later.

Empty columns are more valuable than free cells. One empty column doubles your Supermove capacity, while one free cell only adds one. Prioritize creating and maintaining empty columns.

Universal Winning Habits

Use undo aggressively. Digital solitaire offers unlimited undo, and using it is not cheating — it is exploration. Try a move, see where it leads, undo if the result is worse than expected.

Track your statistics. Play Solitaire Gaming tracks your win rate, best time, and streak for every variant. Watching these numbers improve over time is both motivating and informative.

Play daily challenges. They provide a consistent difficulty level and let you compare results with other players, helping you gauge your skill level objectively.
